I sculpt charcoal on the page, building up and carving out what I see before me until the expression, character, or landscape takes form on the page. My process is one of observation and experimentation. I take time to truly see the form in front of me, allowing the charcoal, watercolour, or feeling of the work to guide me. I often start with a technique or material in mind and then allow the process to take over. Exploring where the piece drives me. Sometimes, it is the pose that calls to me—determining the materials I use and the outcome of the work.
My work around life drawing and the body started in a compulsory class at art school. I quickly fell in love with the female form. It’s soft lines. The way muscle and flesh shape the body and how each component interacts. I was also interested in the connection that observing the bodies of others created between myself and my own body. The influence that making art has on me is something that I continue to explore within my practice.
